Pono and I were lucky enough to go over to Lanai for an overnight. Tutu (Hawaiian for Grandma) watched the kids and we took the ferry over on Saturday afternoon and set up camp at the bay. It was just beautiful!! We built a small kind fire and snuggled together for the first time without a child’s interruption since we started having babies eight years ago. We now have three, the baby Maile just turned two and finally weaned!! Needless to say we've been looking forward to this for a LOOOONG time! The best part, though, was in the morning. We woke up for sunrise and ran down to the ocean with our snorkel gear and fins. We swam out to where we saw a few dolphins. Pono's good buddy Dave, who is a long time surfboard painter, gave us this stuff he made out of quartz crystals and some kinda metal shavings called Organite to give to the dolphins.
We caught up with the dolphins and they were very friendly. There were at first about six of them very close and playful, but they didn't linger too long so we came in to grab some fruit for breaky. Very soon after that, we look out and see HUNDREDS of them. We quickly swam back out to them and they encircled us. They swam in amazing spirals that looked like DNA patterns. It was incredible. It was as if they were trying to communicate something specific to us. I'm not sure how to describe it really. I mean, I have swam with many many dolphins before, but I have never seen anything like this. It was soo amazing! We played with them for hours and then had to come in. As we did, a couple of tourists asked us how we did that.
What could we say? "Jump in!", I said. They didn't have gear, though…
We were positively high from the experience! We packed up our stuff and had to make a run for it to make the noon ferry. On the ride back, we held hands talking about what we thought they were trying to tell us. One thing comes to mind and that is the great Pacific Garbage Patch. If you don't know what this is, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch the video below. There is a huge swirling gyre of plastic muck the size of Texas or even bigger out in the Pacific that is poisoning the ocean. This is serious. The toxicity of the ocean is a huge factor in our demise as a species living on this planet. All species!
No ocean = no plankton = no fish = no dolphins and whales!!!!!
This is unacceptable. We have so much to learn from these intelligent and loving creatures. Tara and I have been talking about this and are networking with others who want to clean up the gyre. Do you care?? Are you inspired?? How can you help?? Educate yourself and others about this. And if you are going to use plastic, make sure you recycle it.
With much Aloha, Eve |
