Darkness and Return

As the seasons cycle in and out our bodies do the same. It is a dance of fluctuations, a natural pulsation which is reflected in our energy levels. There are times of the year that are expansive and others that require us to pull in and conserve our energies. The plants and herbs that are available in summer, autumn, winter and spring have a direct relationship to these cycles and can assist us enormously as we move through them.

As the light begins to diminish after the autumnal equinox, and even after the solstice, it is a time to store up for the winter season ahead. Herbs can help us prepare for this shift. Living in tune with the seasons can only serve to enhance our inner chi, while ignoring them and trying to override our bodies signals leads to depletion and eventual adrenal exhaustion which is pretty much the norm for most people today. Most people operate at only half their capacity, hollow shells of what they were before the neglect even becomes apparent.

The plants that share our immediate environment are generally the ones most useful to us. They deal with the same factors that we have to and for that reason can be easily assimilated into our systems. If you can't get out and pick them yourself, try to locate a local wildcrafter and buy from them. Take advantage of this vital source of energy by making them into teas, tinctures, soups and tonics. They are deeply nourishing to the system and can increase our ability to ward off illness, speed up healing and maintain optimal energy.

The Order of Things

Native American prophecies say that the teachers of the next cycle will be the farmers and those whose hands hold the life that sustains us. This may seem curious to those enmeshed in the technological matrix of today's reality. All it takes is some is some quiet reflection to perceive the validity of this prophecy. The "new time" will crack our consciousness open and leave us no choice but to choose a life path that is in good relationship to all things. How does the mind of a nuclear physicist or an aerospace engineer compare to that of an indigenous person who is raised with the thorough awareness of the order of all things?

If we truly are in contact with life around us, honoring the vital consciousness in all things, respecting the wisdom of life, we have some hope of salvation from the egocentric and mindless destruction that is occurring as I write this. This "contact" emerges from direct perception. When we take the time to truly "see", we can connect to the luminous ground of Being from which we have all come. When we experience this, alive and intelligent, it is easier to recognize the trees as our elders and not so easy to clear-cut a forest in the name of profit.

To establish a balance between oneself and the cosmos it's important to look at reality in a holistic way. In this manner you will begin to perceive that all beings are connected by subtle qualities of mind and vitality as well as a physical, biological network of symbiosis. It is one marvelous web, which in India is known as the Web of Indra. True knowledge of this brings humility, a sense of responsibility and ultimate compassion. It is only in this state of awareness that the Book of Life can be read and understood.

Nature is an open book and all things therein possess some form of "medicine power".

The vision arrived on the wings of Raven. A gift from the dark void of a seemingly endless night. The Ancestors took pity and sent me this gift to release me from the treadmill of convention, the pressure cooker called life where I reacted to every perceived injustice.
