So what are you doing for Earth Day?

Every year, ever since it started, I always have the best intentions for April 22. Some years I’m more successful at attending rallies and organizing actions. Other years I’m less successful, even to the point of losing hope or questioning my relevance in the movement to save the world

But then I realize that it’s not just about one day or one set of actions, but a larger matrix of our relationship with the Earth on a daily basis. Am I living in balance, offsetting my footstep on this fair planet by promoting green, or am I just another hypocritical parasite? When was the last time I examined what kind of impact I am having, the gas I burn and the plastic I use, and paused to consider maybe changing my life a little bit.

After a long look in the mirror, I have to say I’m sorry. I apologize for the rest of the Twelve as well. We can get wrapped up in our other approaches to save the world. Don’t get me wrong—I think it’s crucial to maintain the view at the highest level. And I think it’s very important to point out the evil things that are going on in the world. But it’s also necessary to ground the view in action and not get lost in duality when the real challenge is to increase the positive with sustainable practices. I’m sorry that we haven’t evolved more ourselves and we aren’t already in more of a position to be organizing the types of actions that are going to be necessary to make the shift.

For the time being, we have to remember all the work that is being done and apply ourselves. And then, as we get in the habit of being green rather than just thinking green, we will become an example to others. After germinating, we will blossom. And the seeds of our commitment will ride the current with the possibility of taking root in everyone they touch…

It’s not just about hope. It’s about recognizing what we have and making something out of it.
